A historically important lead mine as this is believed to be the first attempt to operate a mine in Canada. The deposit was apparently known to the indigenous Micmac population before the arrival of Europeans, and the French Intendant, Jean Talon, engaged a group of French miners under the direction of a Dutch mining expert around 1665, to develop the deposit. The attempt was not successful. In the mid 1800s a shaft was sank and an estimated 20 tonnes of ore was recovered. Later mining attempts in the area also failed.
