Skötufjörður is a 16 km long fjord that runs south from Ísafjörður in the middle, between Skarðseyr and Hvítaness in Súðavíkurhreppi. On both sides of the fjord are steep, rocky slopes, Eyrarhlíð to the west and Fossahlíð to the east. They were both considered bad crossings, especially Fossahlíð. In from the fjord Skätufjarðarheiði leads to the Glámuhálendið. At the mouth of the fjord, off Hvítanesi, is the island of Vigur. There is only one town in the settlement, Hvítanes. Around 1950, these eight towns were inhabited in Skátufjörður: Hvítanes, Litlibær, Eyri, Kleifar, Borg, Kálfavík, Hjallar and Skarð, but in 1969 four towns were abandoned.
