Mine which continued working fluorspar from the Red Vein until the late 1970's, when it was under the ownership of Weardale Minerals.
The Stanhopeburn Mine is located along Crawelyside Bank at the eastern end of the Red Vein, which runs the length of Rookhopeburn to the west. The mine was worked between ca. 1830 - 1875 for lead, first by the London Lead Company and later by the Beaumont Co. The mine was reopened in 1906 by the Weardale Lead Co. for fluorspar and has seen a succession of owners through the 20th century. The mine was quite active during the 1970s when owned by Swiss Aluminium UK, but was closed prior to the company's demise in 1982 and has since been idle.
Though a major producer of both lead and fluorspar during it's history, the mine yielded few specimens of any note.
