It is said the mine gained its name, after two miners fell out with a third who was a Frenchman. These two miners staked a neighbouring lease, discovering rich gold in December 1893. To thumb their nose at the former colleague they called it the Siege of Paris.

These two miners dollied 180 oz of gold in eight weeks, then sold the mine to speculators. Shortly after in April 1894, the Seige of Paris and Ethel Mary Gold Mining Company was floated in Adelaide. The two leases together amounted to 12 acres, adjoining the Fortune of War and Victory United mines, on three parallel reefs. The shaft at this stage was down to 50 feet, the water level, showing a reef 18 inches at the surface and 3 feet 6 inches at depth.

The reef dipped north-west, of blue and brown honeycombed quartz, thickly peppered they claimed with fine gold, and a little pyrite.

The investors were told it was a new Coolgardie, one of the richest gold mining areas in the State. Of course it wasn't, and by April 1896 the company had abandoned the lease claiming a deluge of water had entered the shaft. It was then taken up by a syndicate of six local miners. They re-worked the old shaft and sunk a new one. They found very little water or gold.

The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate, and denote the compact goldfield, the historic mine in the immediate area.
