Undoubtedly the richest of the West Cork mining districts, Allihies has a long tradition of mining and its miners emigrated to other famous districts such as Butte, Montana to continue their trade once the Allihies mines became uneconomic.
The Mining Heritage Trust of Ireland have done extensive work in the area including the restoration of the historic Man Engine House and have acted as the driving force behind the creation of a mining museum in the village.
