Iron meteorite, hexahedrite (IIAB, hex)
Find 1868; 7.5 kg

An iron-rich (~5.5 wt% Ni) and flattened mass (28 x 13 x 7 cm) was apparently brought to France in 1867, but the main portion was not obtained by the London Museum of Natural History until the following year. As a more or less normal IIAB meteorite the meteorite is composed almost entirely of kamacite. Accompanying the kamacite are minor amounts of schreibersite, troilite, and accessory chromite. However, as all or almost all of the mass had been artificially heated before its arrival the textures of these normal constituents are somewhat unusual. While Neumann bands are still present, the meteorite appears ataxic as the metal has largely reaggregated into very small grains. Troilite has also recrystallized into small aggregates while schreibersite has been partially absorbed into the metal. Only the chromite appears to have been relatively unaffected by heating and hammering.

San Francisco del Mezquital is one of 124 IIAB iron meteorites listed at the Meteoritical Bulletin Database (as of September 2015) and one of four IIAB irons which have been recovered in Mexico. By 2000 the main mass had been held at the Natural History Museum in London for over a century.
