Iron meteorite, hexahedrite (IIAB,hex)
Find, 1971; 58.3 kg, single mass
An iron meteorite (5.3% Ni) of 58.63 kg was found next to a road in a mountainous region 0.5 km south of Guadalupe y Calvo. The meteorite is predominantly kamacite, but opaques are visible on section surfaces. Several kilogram or near kilogram specimens of this meteorite are held by research institutions, but pertinent published literature with a mineralogical focus in English seems to be quite sparse.
Guadalupe y Calvo is one of of 124 IIAB iron meteorites currently listed with the Meteoritical Bulletin Database (as of early September 2015). Three IIAB Irons have been recovered from Chihuahua, Mexico. The other two — 2.1 ton Coahuila and 36 kg El Burro— have distinctly different trace element profiles.
