The town of Sandstone is 157 kilometres east of Mount Magnet and 661 kilometres north of Perth.

Gold was first found in the area in 1894, by a team of prospectors, including Ernest Shillington, about 20 kilometres south of the present town site.

The area was originally known as Hans Irvine's Find, but the town was gazetted as Sandstone in 1906. It initially contained 8000 people drawn to the area by the gold-rush. A state run battery operated in the town from 1904 to 1982.

There are far fewer people in Sandstone these days. There is a small museum in the town, and a few historic buildings remain along the main street. It provides basic facilities for travellers, and really the only facilities in the region.

Old historic gold mines are spread widely in a 20 kilometre arc south and south-east of the town.
