Ordinary chondrite (H5, S3)
Fell, 6 December 1866; 34 kg

A shower of stones fell, the largest ~11 kg. The meteorite consists primarily of H6 clasts (~60 vol%) and clastic matrix (~40 vol%) with a small addendum of H5 clasts. Olivine (Fa19), pyroxene and albitic plagioclase within the matrix are accompanied by interstitial kamacite-taenite and troilite. Minor phosphates and glass are also reported. The meteoritic material appears to have experienced two or more significant fracturing and/or reheating episodes.

Cangas de Onis is one of 175 witnessed meteorite falls and one of 4 Spanish falls listed exactly as an 'H5 ordinary chondrite' at the Meteoritical Bulletin DataBase (as of January 2016). The H group of ordinary chondrites (ordinary chondrites relatively low in total iron) account for ~ 35% of the fully classified falls. The H5 petrological type in turn accounts for nearly half of all H chondrites. Spanish H5 meteorites include Molina, Olmedilla de Alarcón, and Oviedo as well as Cangas de Onis.

Significant portions of the mass have been kept at the University of Orviedo, the Spanish National Science Museum in Madrid, and the University of Seville.
