The first discovery of gold in this area was made on the farm of one of Nova Scotia’s early colonial attorney generals, the Hon. Richard J. Uniacke. His estate still exists today as a Nova Scotia Museum site. The discoverey was made on June 18, 1865 by David MacIntosh, John Sims and Charles Sims. The district was active from 1867-1941 with a total gold production of more than 27000 troy oz.
