The Ballarat is a historic lease just north of the former Kanowna town site boundary. It was originally taken up by prospectors Jackson and party around 1895, along with neighbouring Prince Oscar and Prince Oscar Extended to the south. Ballarat GML 1562X 10 acres, Prince Oscar 12 acres and Prince Oscar Extended 18 acres.

In 1896 it was sold for 6000 pounds to an English syndicate. They did very little work on the lease, and let it to various tributers for a number of years. In 1897, the Fitzroy lead was discovered on the Prince Oscar Extended, being the first of several deep alluvial washes, generating a large rush of men to the goldfield. In 1900, the mine manager, J. Scott, arrived with police to evict the alluvial miners.

Tributer Peter Knuckey was killed by a fall of earth in 1908.

In 1917, a new syndicate managed after much difficulty to obtain the neighbouring Sunbeam lease. They also unwatered the old Ballarat workings, and sunk the main shaft to intercept the Sunbeam reef at depth. Little in the way of mining is noted though. The mine to 1917 had produced 6340 ounces of gold from 15 172 tonnes of ore.

In 1946, M. Haime took out some crushings from ore left in the upper levels.
