The Hayes brothers and a prospector called Hoff are credited with discovering gold at Gindalbie about the same time in 1895. A pegging rush ensued across 1896. Progress was slow until companies became involved early in the Twentieth Century.

A town developed initially called Hayes New Find, South Gippsland, Vosperton, until finally given its official indigenous title of Gindalbie. By the World War One years the town had ceased to exist, and nothing of it remains today.

The site is 55 kilometres north north-east of Kalgoorlie, near the junction of the Yarri Road and Donkey Rocks Road. Some old workings border the Yarri Road, including an overgrown remnant battery sands area. Further shafts and shallow workings exist a kilometre or two to the east, including a relatively substantial area containing much old machinery probably from more modern times.

Several small outlying gold areas occur to the north, and are included in this section.
