The Southern Cross mine produced 18,135.66 tonnes of ore at 5.93 g/t yielding 3,512.26 ounces of gold. As can be seen by these figures when compared to other mines operating in the area at the time, the deposit was relatively low grade. The mine was sited on the Great Oversight lode.

The lode is a quartz formation parallel to the old Oversight alluvial lead, the reef averaging 10 feet wide but low grade.

Day and party are the first prospectors recorded at the mine, in 1904. Then McGregor and Grant (prospectors) put down a new shaft during 1906 to 1907. Crushings are first noted by Partridge and party in 1909, from a shaft down to 100 feet, and cross-cut for 25 feet. A large chamber had also been stoped out at this level. In 1910, the local battery closed, and with increased cartage charges and the low grade ore, the mine became unprofitable.

In 1912, a new syndicate of miners had taken over the lease, and installed their own small battery. One, C. Greene, lost a finger from an accident whilst repairing a truck at the mine.

An un-named old prospector in 1932, who was at Bulong in its early days returned and worked the old Southern Cross mine. He struck a rich pocket in one of the old levels, showing quartz studded with gold.

Hugh Nicols and Lees take over the mine in 1937, and a year later they had extracted 1000 tonnes of ore at 7 g/t. The war years intervened but operations were resumed subsequently by Nicols and J. Jarvis. In 1947, Bracegirdle (surname) took a short lived option over the mine: GML 1308Y. Nicols continued crushing ore into the late 1940s. Ore from the 120-foot level was being sent to the Kalgoorlie state battery.

The Mindat co-ordinates are approximate, and denotes mostly the Oversight lode marked by a series of old shafts south of the modern Oversight pit.
