Locality type:

Cockburn is a large mineral sands prospect, and potential mine, needing a company with funds to develop it. The prospect is south of Hamelin Pool, and about 10 kilometres west of the Cockburn Station pastoral homestead. The prospect borders the eastern boundary of the Shark Bay World Heritage Area.

The prospect covers 1200 square kilometres of old palaeo shorelines. The main deposit is called the Amy Zone, 35 kilometres long by up to 3 kilometres wide, 10-50 metres deep.

There is a JORC complaint Inferred Resource of 308 MT at 1.2 HM being zircon 23%, titanium ilmenite minerals 48%, rutile 7% and leucoxene 5%. The northern part of the deposit is non JORC complaint at the time of writing, believed to contain 106 Mt at 1.3% HM.

The deposit was discovered around 2000, with a feasibility study for mining carried out in 2009 and 2013.
