The Kingsgate mineral field has been the largest molybdenum & bismuth producer in NSW (to 2000). Its heyday was the period from 1905 to 1920.
The Molybdenum occurs in numerous pipes (around 70) and covers an area of around 700 acres.
An old mining district with pipe-like quartz veins carrying Bi, Mo and As minerals. Located 14 miles ESE of Glen Innes.
Most of the mine dumps have been bulldozed over the years, and it is very difficult to ascertain whether dump material comes from a particular mine site. Unless it is known for certain as to where and when found, it is probably best to simply label material from these mines as Kingsgate.
It should be noted that there are a number of mines often simply mentioned as Kingsgate. There is no Kingsgate Mine as such, rather a series of mines, often grouped simply as Kingsgate. A number of mines in the area were also operated by Kingsgate Mining Company NL.
A Mt Moly has been mentioned as a locality here, however, I consider that the mention of a Mt Moly at Kingsgate is not a proper locality. If there is a Mt Moly mine at Kingsgate then it must be known by another name, as it does not appear to be listed with NSW mines and does not seem to appear in the literature on NSW Molybdenum. I believe that it is simply a mistake in labelling by the original uploader of the locality [K Compton Note].
(NOTE: New England is not a locality descriptor.)
The whole of the Kingsgate mining field is being subdivided into small acreage housing lots (2020).
