Geraldton is 424 kilometres north of Perth, bordering the Indian Ocean. By Western Australian standards it has a relatively large population of 40 488 (2013), mainly in the city itself. Proclaimed 1871. Its economy is based on being a service centre for the Mid-West region, port, and fishing. The Houtman Abrolhos islands and reefs are offshore. The city has a very good maritime museum and waterfront precinct. It gets very hot in summer, and appears windy year round. It has most facilities visitors would need.
In 2011, the shire amalgamated with the Mullewa and Greenough Shires, despite local opposition. The shire now covers 12 625.5 square kilometres. Mullewa is a small northern wheatbelt town inland, and is listed separately on Mindat before 2011. Greenough is immediately south of Geraldton along the coast. The Greenough village dates from 1865, and has the largest collection of stone buildings in Australia. Bordering the Brand Highway it is now used solely for tourism. The small town of Walkaway with a historic tavern is inland.
