Quarry - last checked 2021
Köppen climate type:
Located 30 kilometres south-east of the Nanutarra Roadhouse, and 4 kilometres east of the Henry River. The red quarry is 300 metres west of the Nanutarra White Marble Quarry. The quarry is 30 metres long by 20 metres wide and 5 metres deep. The source from 2010 states the last mining was in 2006, with material since sourced from a large stockpile.
The marble blocks produced were called Rosso Venezia, under the probably valid assumption consumers are more likely to buy marble they believe is from Italy. Western Australia has several fine marble prospects, but most remain undeveloped.
It is massive mahogany red brecciated dolomitic marble, containing minor red, white, green and grey veins and lenses. It is hematite stained, very fine grained carbonate, with hematite rich micritic zones, adjacent to the lenses of sparry carbonate, and small patches and zones of hematite rich carbonate.
Access is by heading east from the Uaroo pastoral station homestead near the North-West Coastal Highway. Both quarries contain substantial buildings and stockpiles of marble blocks.
