The quarry lies on the site of the Pen-y-bryn Shaft (SJ203707)of the Halkyn District United Mines and the large 20th century workings around the shaft have been subsumed by quarry workings.
Azurite crystals found in 1998, exceptionally to 7mm, occurred on calcite containing inclusions of oxidized chalcopyrite. Also, pseudomorphs of azurite after chalcopyrite. Some specimens included purple fluorite and/or hydrocarbon. Malachite was common (Bevins & Mason, 1999).
The 1998 locality has since largely disappeared under a haulage road.
