Ordinary chondrite (L6)
Find, 1960; 3.755 kg

An oxidized meteoric 780 g stone was found. Additional stones (1 kg; 1.975 kg) were recovered later in the same area. Inspections reveal indistinct chondrules within an equilibrated matrix. Compositionally, equilibrated olivine (Fa25) and low Ca-orthopyroxene ('hypersthene') are characteristic of the L-chondrite geochemical group. Mineralogically, the meteorite consists primarily of dominant olivine and pyroxene accompanied by minor troilite and Fe-Ni metal. Accessory chromite, copper, and ilmenite have been reported. Much of the kamacite has been weathered away.

The main mass is held at the United States National Museum (Washington).

What's in a name? 'Al-Ghanim (stone)' is an L6 ordinary chondrite. It is to be distinguished from another nearby Saudi Arabian meteorite, the 'Al-Ghanim (iron)' also found in 1960.
