Old and extensive slate quarry that closed in 1969. The site has been partly redeveloped as a pumped storage electricity power station which caused the lower levels of the quarry to be lost.
The quarry workshops (including the largest water wheel on the British mainland) have been preserved and are now home to the Welsh Slate Museum, a part of the National Museum of Wales.
Various of the quarry faces have now become popular rock climbing venues and are home to many of north Wales classsic rock climbs, although mainly in the upper grades.
