Moonta, Yorke Peninsula, South Australia, Australia

An old mining centre for a large number of copper mines discovered in 1861 and closing in 1923. The Moonta Mining Co. became the first in Australia to pay out over 1 million pounds in dividends to its shareholders. Recently mining activities recommenced at two small old mines, the Poona and Wheal Hughes which were mined by open cut and underground decline in the 1990's. The deposits were small but high grade and mining was completed here in 1995. The area is most famous for atacamite, cuprite, and chalcopyrite crystals.
