San Leone area, Assemini, Cagliari Province, Sardinia, Italy

In 1958 the SOMIREN made a radioactive mineral search also in Sardinia. In this area, located at 1 km South from the homonimous iron (mainly magnetite) mine, there were found radioactive anomalies. Another similar occurrence was found also in a nearby locality named Arcu su Linnarbu and located more towards SE with respect to the previous one. (Already described on its own topic).

The geology of this area is dominated by the presence of Mt. Arcosu granitic mass, the intrusion of which has generated the usual thermomethamorphic ring around the intrusion. The previous Cambrian schists have been transformed also in magnetite skarns and apear deeply silicified. The uranium minerals have been found in a siliceous breccia located at contact between granitic mass and schists. It is also deeply permeated by Fe oxides.
