Punta delle Pietre Nere, Lesina, Promontorio del Gargano, Foggia, Puglia, Italia

In this area located on Gargano Promontory (Foggia Province), there are some occurrences of black rocks represented by basaltic masses probably erupted in Upper Tertiary. Around that area there is a triassic gypsum unit outcrop, rised by diapiric and fault movements. These rocks are covered by continental sands, on which the touristic village of Marina di Lesina has been built. This area has been particuarly studied by geologists not for its mineralogy, but because of the geological and hydrogeological characters of karst and parakarstic phenomena, in the area we have the formation of sudden sinkholes in the urbanized area. It has been demonstrated that the excavation of a new channel into the Gypsum Unit, as emissary of the Lesina Lake, made this unit much more vulnerable to the karst and to the erosion of the cavity filling due to the variation of the groundwater conditions.
