Quite large area of shale tips which look quite inviting on the 1:25000 map. Although the tips contain numerous unbroken ironstone nodules (August 2003), a morning's fairly diligent search yielded a few reasonable doubly-terminated quartz crystals, but no sulphide minerals.
The first Blaenserchan shaft was sunk to the Tillery Seam at 113 yards in 1890 by Partridge Jones & Co. Ltd.
In 1918, together with the nearby Llanerch Colliery there were 2,060 men employed, but by 1923 Blaenserchan employed only 1,105 men, working the Meadow Vein, Black Vein and Big Vein seams.
At the time of Nationalisation in 1947 there were 720 men employed.
In 1969 coal-winding ceased at Blaenserchan when all the coal produced was routed underground through Tirpentwys Colliery and onto Hafodrynys for processing. Thes arrangements changed again in 1977 when Blaenserchan's coal reached the surface via the drift at Abertillery New Mine.
Blaenserchan closed in 1985.
