Los, Ljusdal, Hälsingland, Sweden

Los copper mines is located 2,1 km NNV of Los church and occur over a length of appr 200m striking NV-SE. Copper ore was mined from 1699 in the so called Gamla (Old) Mine (=Adolfsgruvan). In 1736 the mineralized area was stripped of overburden which led to the discovery of rich cobalt ore. During the first years the ore was exported directly- but in -45 the Sophiendahl factory started its production.
The ore occured in thin (1-30cm) thick veins and lenses- but also as impregnations and ore shots.

The element nickel was discovered 1751 in ore (probably gersdorffite) from the copper-cobalt mines of Los.

Mines:
Jonas (or Norra), Rymningen, Gustafs, Adolfs, Lovisa (=Nya, New).
Test pits (=försök):
Tryggens, Vestra, Hya, Hans Pers, Bergens.

During 1990ies the mines were dewatered and became a tourist attraction.
