A former small Au-Pb-Zn-Cu-Ag-Graphite mine located in the SW ¼ sec. 21, T.14S., R.27E., about 2½ miles North of Dos cabezas and South of the Central Copper Mine. Started in 1877. Reopened 1911-1914 and closed 1942. Owned at times, or in part, by the Consolidated Gold Mines, Inc. ( -1934), Dives Mining Co. (1919- ); Twin Peak Mining Co. (about 1922- ), and the Santa Maria Mining Co.
Mineralization is scattered bunches and disseminations of auriferous pyrite and minor base metal sulfides in a strong, coarsely-textured quartz vein along a fault fissure zone separating a wide band of metamorphosed, granitic Cretaceous shale from Precambrian granitic rock. Veins occur within steeply-dipping, metamorphosed black Cretaceous shales that occupy a belt approximately 1,100 feet wide. The 'Big Ledge', a vein of coarse-grained, white quartz, 100 feet wide, separates the shales from the Precambrian granite along the SW strand of the Apache Pass fault zone, and, in places, reportedly contains up to 0.10 oz Au/T. Gold occurs in the sulfides, mainly galena.
Workings include a 100 foot inclined shaft, a 1,000 foot adit and tunnels. Newer workings 212 feet below the upper tunnel included an adit 1,800 through the 'Big Ledge' and nearly through the slate belt. A 10-stamp mill and amalgamation-concentration mill was erected on the property. Some 10,000 tons of gold ore were produced sporadically from 1882 to 1931. Total estimated production is $20,000 Au (1911-1914), and $40,000 Au (1877 - 1920).
