Store Kufjord (Thorfjord; Thurfjord), Seiland Island, Alta, Finnmark, Norway
This is the locality for the famous "Seiland zircons". This locality has been refered to as " close to Stjernsund" which geographically is located further SW.
The names Thorfjord (or Thurfjord) are misnomers.
A large nepheline syenite dike at the eastern side of Store Kufjord, going east from the sea. It can be followed in its length for a couple of kms and is about 8-10 m wide when at the widest.
The locality was first discovered by the english geologist David Roberts in 1973.
Between 1980-1988 a zircon bearing part of the dike was claimed for ilmenite (by Andreas Corneliusen and others). A large number of specimens with well developed, deep red zircon crystals was taken out and sold on mineral shows worldwide.
Zircon specimens has also been found at other localities at Seiland but not in the same quantity as from this locality.
