A Au-Ag-Cu-Pb-Zn-Hg-Mn-dumortierite/kyanite-andalusite-sillimanite-Sb-Hg mining district located on the eastern slope of the Dome Rock Mountains in T2-3N, R20W, South of Quartzsite. The district's name is pronounced LA HOYA.
Mineralization is varied: (1) Gold placer deposits in unsorted gravel and rock fragments, mainly cemented by calcium carbonates, on a sloping rock pediment; (2) Spotty and irregular copper, lead, zinc, gold and silver mineralization, mainly along faults and fractures, in quartz veins in metamorphic Mesozoic schist and gneiss; and, (3) Spotty, disseminated mercury mineralization with minor base and precious metals in fissure veins in Mesozoic schist.
Workings include mainly dry placer opertions from the 1860's to the 1950's. These produced some 9,464 oz. gold containing about 690 oz. silver. Several small mines and prospects for base and precious metals, worked mainly in the 1930's and 1940's. These produced some 294 tons of ore containing about 332 oz. gold, 3,127 oz. silver, and 20 tons of copper. Some 116 or more flasks of mercury were produced from 1908 to 1914.
