Golden Harp Mine (Golden Harp prospect), U.S. Army Yuma Proving Grounds, Tank Mountains District, Tank Mts, Yuma Co., Arizona, USA

Latitude: 33°5'46"N
Longitude: 113°37'51"W
A former surface and underground gold mine located in the East-center & SE¼ of sec. 7, and on the center border with sec. 7 of sec. 8, T4S, R13W, eastern foothills of the Tank Mountains, 2.5 miles SW of Flat Top Butte, on a military reservation. Started about 1898 by Mr. Morris; relocated by Messrs. G. Newbrough & T. Bryden (1929).

Mineralization is varied: (1) Scattered, short, lenticular, and narrow, gold-bearing quartz, carbonate, iron oxide and minor, partly oxidized, copper and iron sulfide veins in fissure zones in Mesozoic granitic intrusive and metamorphic schist, with dioritic to rhyolitic dikes. Wall rocks are sericitized, silicified, and carbonatized. Gold concentrated by weathering in near-surface iron oxides and quartz. An associated rock unit is the Kofa volcanics. Tectonic influences include block faulting.

The quartz vein, which appears to have been generally less than two feet wide, strikes N.25ºE. and dips about 80ºN. It is lenticular along the strike and is not traceable for more than 75 feet (22.86 meters). Some of the quartz is yellowish in color, and in places, it contains abundant iron oxide and chrysocolla.

Low, rounded hills and ridges of schist rise above Palomas Plain. Westward, they give way to rougher topography and, northward, disappear beneath a basalt mesa. In general, these schists are striped and of a brownish colour, and they resemble fine-grained arkose. They strike N.30ºW. and dip 80ºNE. Several diorite porphyry dikes up to a few feet in width cut them.

Workings include 2 vertical shafts at 20 feet & 60 feet deep and a short open cut. Some small production during 1930.
