A former small surface and underground Ag-Pb-Cu-Au-Zn-Mo mine located in the SE¼SW¼SW¼ sec. 35, T.22S., R.15E, adjacent of the S to the Lookout Mine, 14 miles NE of Nogales in Cox Gulch, on National Forest land. Discovered 1881 by A.J. Stockton and others. Produced 1927-1937. Owned/operated at times, or in part, by Stockton; the Gray Brothers (1927); Haverly (1929); Mr. E.W. Brown; and, Vanderwalker and Nuttle.
Mineralization is pockety, argentiferous galena, partly oxidized to cerussite (cerussite enveloping cores of galena), minor oxidized copper minerals, and wulfenite in a quartz and gouge gangue along a strong E-W trending shear zone with a steep dip to the S, cutting altered and leached Precambrian metamorphic rocks, intruded by Jurassic granitic intrusive. Deposits are also concentrated in a contact zone between diorite and granite. Ore concentration was surface oxidation and leaching and supergene enrichment. Alteration exists to 80 feet of depth.
Workings include an 83 foot deep shaft and pit operations to a depth of 25.3 meters, plus drifts and stopes. Over 250 tons of Pb-Ag ore were mined in the late 1800's and up through 1937. The output for the group would be some 350 tons of ore averaging about 56 oz. Ag/T, 39% Pb, 1% Cu, and minor Au.
