Ludlow/Amboy is situated in the eastern Mojave Desert of southern California. The area is characterized most recently by expansive flows of late Cenozoic basanites (feldspathoid-bearing basalt) and several pyroclastic cones. Dish Hill, one of the pyroclastic cones, is known locally as a source for Olivine (var. Forsterite), Iddingsite and Kaersutite.
