Silverton is the only town of significant size in San Juan County. It is located along the Animas River between Mineral Creek and Cement Creek at the southern most end of the Silverton Caldera, one of several large volcanic subsidence structures in the San Juan Mountains. Silverton is on relatively flat alluvial ground and is therefore virtually devoid of mining excavations in its immediatye environs. Silverton is in the Animas Mining District.
