Granite pegmatites. Brunswick pegmatite field. Large number of quarries and prospects that are permanently water-filled.Ref.: Rocks & Min.: 62:407-415 (list on 409). Topsham is located about 25 miles NE of Portland, ME. The mineralization is a mile-wide belt of granitic pegmatites originally operated as feldspar quarries in a large district. Numerous world-famous radioactive mineral outcrops cover an area of several square kilometers from Standpipe Hill in the west near the Androscoggin River to the Cathance River in the east. The uraninite, monazite-(Ce), and ishakawaite minerals are particularly radioactive as they contain varying small amounts of thorium.
