East of a line which approximately runs along the Lieser river valley, across Millstatt lake and down the lower Afritz stream valley, the older alpine rocks ('Altkristallin') are covered by upper palaeozoic rocks ('Gurktaler Decke'), mainly metavolcanites, phyllites, schists, siliceous schists, marbles and dolomites.
The Millstatt ridge ('Millstätter Seenrücken'), a low mountain range to the northeast of the Drau river valley, southeast of Spittal, is situated on the geological boundary between these areas. It is relatively rich in both pegmatites (sometimes enriched in P) and mineralized clefts. To the east and southeast, it is joined by the Afritz Mts ('Afritzer Berge').
