Markham Colliery was opened by the Markham Steam Coal Company, a subsidiary of Tredegar Iron and Coal Company, in 1913. In 1945 there were 1421 men employed.
During the Second World War the colliery was linked to Oakdale Colliery (about 4km away) to provide an escape route in case of bombing. From 1979 coal from Markham reached the surface via Oakdale Colliery.
Markham closed in 1986 and the tips are now largely landscaped or removed.
