Officially named Republic of the Congo; formerly known as Middle Congo, French Congo and Congo-Brazzaville.
The Republic of Congo is divided into twelve departments [these departments replaced former regions in 2002]. Each department is subdivided into districts and communes, except Brazzaville and Pointe-Noire, which are subdivided into arrondissements.

Not to be mistaken for Congo (the former Belgian Congo, Congo-Kinshasa and Zaire) (http://www.mindat.org/loc-14231.html).
