A group of U-Fe claims/prospect with surface and underground workings located in sec. 1, T4S, R23W, about 7 miles E of the Colorado River, on BLM-administered land. Discovered by Richard Peters of Yuma, AZ (fall of 1948).
Country rock is a medium-grained, foliated Precambrian granite containing lenticular inclusions of mica schist, the largest of which is several hundred feet long. The elongation of the inclusions, like the regular foliation, strikes about N.55ºW. and dips 55ºSW, but the strike and dip show extreme local variations. The principal joints strike N.15ºW. and dip steeply Eastward. The schist inclusions commonly have hematite veins along their footwall contact, and parts of these veins are very weakly radioactive. Barren quartz veins occur in small swarms and locally follow the principal joints. No uranium minerals were recognized in either the shaft or the pits.
Workings include a 25 foot inclined shaft on the Atom No. 1 claim, plus shallow prospect pits. No production record.
Samples taken by the owner contained 0.01 to 0.04% U. As the samples indicate that the U is in equilibrium and there is no evidence of strong mineralization, it seems unlikely that the deposits will improve in grade at greater depth.
