Arguably Ireland's most famous mineral locality, certainly it's most prolific.
The district has a long history of outstanding mineral specimens, unfortunately very little of this material was actually preserved.
It was only in the late 1970's did the efforts of the late Richard Barstow cause the area to gain international recognition. Countless museum quality specimens of mirror lustre galena and honey blende were saved by Barstow by purchasing material from the miners.
Nowadays, finding worthwhile specimens is virtually impossible with all of fabulous galena and sphalerite for which the District is famous, long gone.
Carbonate-hosted stratabound and vein Pb-Zn deposits.
