Originally the site of D. Sieshiltz farm in 1883 when sporadic mining in the area occurred. First description of the original vertical shaft (now backfilled) was by B.L. Miller in 1912. Underlain by a Precambrian hornblende graphite gneiss, the unusual assemblage of mineral deposition at the site can be described as enigmatic at best. (quoted B. L. Miller; 1912, p.114)
