Metcalf is a former mining town. It is now a site covered by tailings from the Morenci Mine. The post office was established August 25, 1899 and closed May 15, 1936. The town's population during its heyday was 4000 to 5000 people. The copper mine was discovered in 1870 and was the mainstay of the town. A wood burning railroad nicknamed the "Little Emma" brought ore out of the canyon.
