Torrington is a former mill town on the upper reaches of the Naugatuck River that was initially known as Wolcottville. It was first incorporated in 1740 and was the birthplace of the state's brass industry starting around 1835. It is the largest city in Litchfield County and the birthplace of abolitionist John Brown, who's infamous 1859 Harper's Ferry raiders included John Cook, son of Haddam, Connecticut mineral collector/dealer Nathaniel Cook.
The geology of Torrington includes very complexly faulted and folded metamorphic rocks. The oldest and most resistant rocks are Late Proterozoic (Grenville age) gneisses, part of the Laurentian crust, that occupy a V-shaped area opening to the north, with the apex near downtown. The east side follows State Route 8, and the west side trending NW to Drakeville and beyond. These rocks are the southern terminus of the Berkshire Massif. Allochthonous Cambrian Manhattan and Hoosic Schists flank the Proterozoic Gneisses to the W and E, respectively. In the southwest part of town, around West Torrington, is a complex of small Ordovician intrusives including the Litchfield Norite, which contain grains of pyrrhotite, chalcopyrite and pentlandite (equivalent to a similar complex at Prospect Mountain in Litchfield), and felsic gneiss that overlap the Cameron's Line thrust fault. South of these plutons and the thrust fault is an area of Cambro-Ordovician Rowe Schist and amphibolite, and Ratlum Mountain Schist, that extends southward into NE Litchfield. These schists host many large porphyroblastic minerals such as almandine, kyanite, staurolite, albite and ilmenite. Regional, presumably Mesozoic-age, high-angle normal faults cut these metamorphic rocks. A NW-SE trending fault follows the West branch of the Naugatuck River and a NE-SW trending fault follows the Still River and state Route 8, the two faults intersecting just W of downtown and more or less topographically defining the S end of the Berkshire Massif.
