Long Fell Mines, Long Fell, Hilton, Escarpment District, North Pennines, South Eastern Region (Westmorland), Cumbria, England, UK

Barytes mines working veins in the Melmerby Scar Limestone on the summit of Long Fell.
Grid reference given is for Long Fell Barytes Co. adit portal on 'B' Vein.
Production commenced in 1914 and continued intermittently until 1950. By this time Long Fell had become part of the target area for Warcop Firing Range and despite the fact that money had been spent protecting the adit mouth with blast-walls (must've been interesting working!), further operations became impossible.
It is thought that substantial reserves of barytes remain.
Massive baryte abundant on the tips but so are artillary shells, access no longer permitted.
