North and Western Region; Cumberland
Located 4 miles NW of Keswick. Threlkeld Mine worked Woodend and Gategill lead-zinc veins above Threlkeld village, the workings on the latter are thought to pre-date the use of gunpowder.
The workings are extensive, Woodend High and Low levels were driven for nearly a mile beneath Blencathra. Quartz was the chief gangue mineral and pyrite was found in the lower level. Barytes occurred in a stringer off the Woodend Lode.
Chalcopyrite occurred, but not in economic quantities. Cerussite and malachite are also reported.
