Extensive area of opencast and underground workings on both sides of the Newbiggin (Teesdale) to Westgate (Weardale) road. The map reference given is for the openworks on the west side of the road which are on the Flask Vein, to be seen outcropping to the south. The area between Wester Beck and Flushiemere Beck, where there is a separate mine, is traversed by a remarkable complex of veins including the Westerhead, Tarn Streak, New Streak, Pike Law Old, Broadly Hill North, Broadly Hill South, Leonard's and Flask veins, all of which have been worked for lead but none for fluorite. This mineral, consequently, is still to be found in abundance in the vein material both on the dumps and at outcrop. The normal suite of minerals, including secondaries, is also to be found.
