Western Colliery worked for steam coal. Started in 1872, it was originally named Edwards Pit after the son of Welsh industrialist and Liberal politician David Davies (Llandinam), chairman of the coal-mining Ocean Merthyr company formed in 1867. It was subsequently called Blaenogwr Colliery, then variously Western Colliery, Ocean Colliery and Ocean Western Colliery. By 1945, over 900 men worked here.
Western Colliery was linked underground with the nearby Wyndham Colliery in 1957. The two collieries were then merged in 1965 and were known as Wyndham/Western, with coal from the combined mines being raised at Wyndham Colliery. Wyndham/Western closed in 1984.
The colliery buildings and tips have subsequently been landscaped or removed. The OS NGR given here was the location of the Western colliery buildings and tips. A further remote tip was located at NGR SS944927
