Nikkerud gruver (Åserud, Aaserud), Nedre Eiker kommune, Buskerud fylke, Norge
The name Nikkerud mines covers several small prospects and mines and som larger openpit mines.
among them are Åserud (Aaserud) Mine (with open pits of a large depth), Magnetgruva, Dorotheagruva and Skramnæs Mine. A large partly waterfilled (unnamed ?) open pit can be seen east of Åserud mine. Mining for iron (magnetite ore)started in this area at the end of 1600, thus being the oldest mine in this field (Drammen/Konnerud). A part of Kongsberg and Hassel Ironworks in the period 1690-1697. From 1697, Eidsfoss Ironwork took over the mine, being one of it's most important mines.
The mines are situated in contactmetamorphosed silurian limestone of the Steinsfjorden formation. The mines is located very close to the border between the municipalities of Nedre Eiker and Drammen.
