The West Mine was the biggest mine on Alderley Edge, the main workings occurred during the period 1857-77 by the Alderley Edge Mining Company. There was very intermittent working from 1909 until the mine was finally closed in 1923.
The entrance to underground workings was via a large opencast quarry. The mine entrance was eventually sealed and the opencast filled during the late 1950's and early 60's due to the number of accidents that occurred here, some fatal.
Access is still possible, but is controlled.
