A former small underground Ag-Au mine located in the SW¼SE¼ sec. 7, T23S, R11E, west of Warsaw Road and about 2 miles West of Ruby, at 4,600 feet of altitude, on National Forest land. Started before 1890 and closed 1903. Closed 1940. Owned by M.J. Elsing (1934).
Mineralization is metamorphosed grits of probable Cretaceous age, intruded by altered basic dikes that strike NE-ward. The vein strikes SE-ward and dips steeply NE-ward, and more than 50 feet wide at places. Gangue is coarse-textured, massive white quartz. Disseminations and bunches of auriferous pyrite are present in the oreshoots. Near surface most of the pyrite is oxidized to limonite and hematite. Host rock units are the Cobre Ridge Tuff and the Sidewinder Quartz Monzonite. Assays from the hanging wall: Au .240 oz/ton; Ag 0.54 oz/ton and Au 1.120 oz/ton; Ag 1.70 oz/ton.
Workings included several open cuts and about 500 feet of underground workings, mostly tunnels. A 40-ton mill was installed (early 1890's until 1898) and a 30-stamp mill (1902).
Discovery Year: 1800'S
Deposit 2 MASSIVE QUARTZ CORE 10-30 FEET THICK - BORDERED BY ZONES OF FLAT DIPPING QUARTZ VEINLETS - MOST WORK ON 4-2 FEET VEINLET ZONE ON HANGING WALL.
Development 1 PAST OPERATORS INCLUDE W.R. RAMSDELL (1911), ARIZONA GOLD MINING AND MILLING CO., ARIZONA OPHIR MINING CO., FOOTE, PESANO ; ECON.COM: FLAT LYING CAP OF A LARGE HILL SO THAT EARLY WORK WAS DONE BY SURFACE STRIPPING & DOWN HILL HAULAGE.
Geology 1 2 SMALL SIDEWINDER DIKES INTRUDED FAULTS WHICH OFFSET SILICIFIED ZONES - ONE INTRUDED PARALLEL TO MINERALIZED ZONE - ONE CUTS IT. ; GEOL.DESC: NW FAULTS OFFSET SILICIFIED ZONE, DISPLACED DOWN - DIP EXTENSION RESULTED IN PATCHES OF SILICIFIED - TUFF THAT CROP OUT NORTH OF MINE AND NEAR MARGARITA MINE
Location 1 INFO FROM LAND.ST :(1964)
Production 1 ESTIMATES 17,000 TONS MINED BUT NOT OVER 3/4'S MILLED - REMAINDER ON DUMP.
Reserve-Resource 1 H1-RESERVE ESTIMATE FROM PRIVATE REPORT IN 1900 - PROBABLY NOT A GOOD ESTIMATE.
Workings 1 MOST WORK BY SURFACE STRIPPING AND SHALLOW OPEN PIT - DATA ABOVE FOR UNDERGROUND STOPE.
