979m high stratovolcano with numerous active fumaroles in the crater. Composed mainly of pyroxene andesites, sometimes olivine-bearing, with lesser amounts of hornblende dacites. Ruins of abandoned sulfur-mining operations visible in the crater, where liquid sulfur is sometimes erupted, and fumarolic sulfur crystals are still being deposited in rock fissures and inside metal pipe trash. Some plagioclase phenocrysts contain copper sulfide inclusions, possibly derived from a copper deposit in the wall rock of the magma chamber (T. Chiba, 1989).
