Green County is underlain by Ordovician sedimentary rocks, primarily sandstones and dolostones which outcrop most frequently in the west half of the county.. Where they do, the dolostones are often quarried. Much of the east half of the County is blanketed by glacial drift - till, outwash and loess, which can on occasion yield interesting specimens including "drift" copper.
